The Hindenburg catastrophe occurred on 6 May, 1937. The cause of the fire remains unknown, though there are multiple theories. Surprisingly, only 36 people perished in the disaster, one of them a ground crewman. The loss of the Hindenburg caused a decline in public interest in airship travel. What would have happened if the Hindenburg had not been lost? Maybe zeppelins would have remained popular. Also the band Led Zeppelin would have had to come up with a different photo for their debut album's cover. Personally, I'd like to fly on an airship some day. But I'm eccentric like that.

The Signs of Boise

Spent the weekend in Boise.  Idaho, that is.  It was pretty nice.  The weather was cool but not cold.  The town was decent.  My mother and my daughter and I - my wife had to work and couldn't come along - went up to attend a baptism for a cousin's son.

While there, I took pictures of some of the local signs.  And since I'm getting a case of that whole "sleepy prior to getting ready to go to work"-thing, I'll skip the chit-chat and get right to the photos.

The name of this annex of the local hospital was "Elks Wound Center."  Hmmm...

Somebody went to a lot of effort to build this little house.  It was maybe three feet tall, at most.  With power company equipment all around it.  Like the world's biggest dog house, or the world's smallest  roadside shack.

I loved this one.  They were everywhere.  The signs, that is, not the motorcycles.  I say they should change the emphasis of this sign to: "Look Twice, Motorcycles are EVERYWHERE!"  Like the motorcycles are stalking you.  Creeping up from behind.  Kinda spooky and stuff.

"Sleep with Grace," huh?  I don't even know the lady.  Who came up with the name of this mattress store, I wonder?  I hope their name was not Grace.

On the highway into town, there was a sign for "Memory Road."  I tried to take a picture while passing, but the camera's focus couldn't keep up with the rate of travel, I guess.  Thus, Memory Road is fuzzy.

When I was nineteen, I spent  $90 in this very Dress Barn Outlet on my first serious girlfriend.  I went with her up to Boise (it was my first time there) with her family to see some of her relatives, and we went shopping to the local outlet mall.  She took to some pants and blouse outfit and I went and bought it for her.  She said it would be good for job interviews and stuff.  Boy, I wish I had ninety bucks to blow on anything anymore, let alone an outfit for a girl whom I'd only dated for a month or two.  How the years change a man's perspective.  Of course, I also managed to get my first real french kiss on that trip, so something sorta good came out of it.  If keeping score is part of the game, that is.

We passed the Boise airport, and I snapped a shot of this SouthWest airlines flight coming in.

You've heard of a one horse town, but I bet you never heard of a one horse trailer.

It was a good trip.  Nice to get out of town and get away for awhile.  Plus, the hotel had cable TV.  Real cable TV.  I watched the last half of Iron Man and the last half of Braveheart, plus five minutes of A Nightmare on Elm Street, all within a 24 hour period.  How cool is that?  Uh...  It sucks to be poor.

The parting comment:

"You know what I want.  You know when I want it.  So let's go, huh?  Make with the cat food, yeah?"  I swear, our cat is always hungry.

  1. That's a good picture of Oscar. He really is always hungry. He does nothing but burn through calories! He is always racing up and down the trees, climbing fences, hunting, chasing moths and other flying insects, wanders the neighborhood. He's one active cat. He plays hard. He sleeps hard too. I tried shoving him awake once and got no response.
The sign photos were funny. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Gotta wonder about that Elks wound building ....why go to the trouble of shooting at them if you're gonna pay to fix em up...in quite spacious digs. Wonder how they get to the 4th floor? Glad you enjoyed our trip!
