The Hindenburg catastrophe occurred on 6 May, 1937. The cause of the fire remains unknown, though there are multiple theories. Surprisingly, only 36 people perished in the disaster, one of them a ground crewman. The loss of the Hindenburg caused a decline in public interest in airship travel. What would have happened if the Hindenburg had not been lost? Maybe zeppelins would have remained popular. Also the band Led Zeppelin would have had to come up with a different photo for their debut album's cover. Personally, I'd like to fly on an airship some day. But I'm eccentric like that.

Thoughts from the White Board - February 28

I still have three book reviews to go before I'm all caught up, but I'll try to space them out a bit.  If I can get through this mid-term slump, I might have some time to actually do something else besides book reviews and Thoughts.  Still, it's great to be in school.

As an aside, I just finished watching The Last Man on Earth starring Vincent Price.  I watched most of it last night and the last half hour today.  I must say, it is probably the most faithful version of Matheson's story "I Am Legend" that I have yet seen.  Better than the Wil Smith movie (that's a kind of theme around here, I guess you'd say.  See how many times I say: "It was better than the Wil Smith movie" in my blog and you may win a prize!), and better than the Charleton Heston version titled The Omega Man.

The movie was pretty cool, and I liked the ending better than the book's ending.  Very dramatic.  Though never specifically called "vampires," the monsters in The Last Man on Earth were much more vampire-like than either remake, which I also preferred.  Kind of "zombie-vampires," you might say.  As opposed to the "fast zombies" that we get in the aforementioned Wil Smith movie, or the "Zombie Power" 1960s militant mutants from Omega Man.  Those guys always looked like rejects from a Black Panther rally to me.

And best of all, to my knowledge, The Last Man...  is not under copyright to anyone, so you can download it off the internet and watch it for free.  Hurray for stuff in the public domain!  Free stuff rules!

In keeping with having just finished The Last Man on Earth, I thought I'd put this one in.  Yes, "I am Legend" by Matheson was vampires, and The Last Man... was more zombie-vampires, but you get the idea.  Anyway, in my case, it could be a flatbed photo scanner, a CD storage tower, or a PlayStation 2 "Guitar Hero" guitar controller.  Between those choices, I'd say I'm pretty much screwed.  I'll be hunting your brains soon.  Hope you did better than I.
